Biden's budget vacancy raises eyebrows . . .
It’s been six months since President Biden took office, and one Cabinet position remains vacant: director of the Office of Management and Budget.
Biden’s first choice for the job, Neera Tanden, withdrew from consideration in early March as her path to confirmation seemed to hit a dead end. He has yet to put forward another nominee for the role as the agency gears up to work with congressional Democrats on a sprawling multi-trillion-dollar reconciliation bill.
Shalanda Young was confirmed months ago as deputy director of OMB and is serving as the acting director in absence of a Senate confirmed leader. A White House spokesperson said Monday there was no update on the timeline for when Biden might put forward an OMB nominee. The Hill
Republicans seek to capitalize on Biden inflation . . . Republicans are seizing on rising inflation as they attempt to derail President Biden’s economic agenda and take back control of Congress in next year’s midterm elections. GOP lawmakers have highlighted quickly rising prices, and strategists believe the issue could resonate deeply with a broad range of voters while congressional Democrats push ahead with plans to spend trillions
more. But many economists expect prices to cool off well before voters head to the polls, posing risks for the GOP’s strategy. For now, though, Americans are reckoning with higher costs for gasoline, food, automobiles and numerous other goods and services after prices plunged during the depths of the coronavirus pandemic. Consumer prices have risen 5.4 percent in the past 12 months, according to the Labor Department, as the swift reopening of the economy pushes inflation higher.

Graham says adding amnesty to infrastructure bill is "power grab" . . . Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., told Fox News on Monday that the Democratic push to add amnesty to the multi-trillion-dollar "infrastructure package" is a "power grab" that may be the dumbest idea in the history of the White House and Senate while there is a border crisis unfolding. "If you give one person legal status there will be a run on our border like you have
never seen before…the dumbest idea in the history of the Senate, the history of the White House. It will lead to the breakdown of law and order beyond what you see today," Graham said. He laid into Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer for attempting to pass — without any Republican support — a monsterous $3.5 trillion budget resolution that he said has not even been written. Texas Rep. Introduces Bill to Audit 13 Most-Populous Counties’ Election Results . . . A Texas House representative announced Monday he’s introducing a bill for a forensic audit of the most populous counties’ election results. According to the text of House Bill 241, introduced by Republican state Rep. Steve Toth, forensic reviews of counties with more than 415,000 population should be carried out before Nov. 1, 2021, and they should be
completed before Feb. 1, 2022. The counties that should be audited, according to the bill, include Harris, Dallas, Bexar, Tarrant, Collin, Travis, Denton, Hidalgo, Fort Bend, El Paso, Williamson, Montgomery, and Cameron. Epoch Times
Social conservatives 'frustrated' over Trump Supreme Court justices' rulings . . . Former Vice President Mike Pence, addressing a crowd of some 1,200 evangelical activists attending the annual leadership summit of the Family Leader, a top social conservative organization in the first-in-the-nation presidential caucus state of Iowa, touted the Trump administration's success in shifting the federal bench to the right.
"We appointed more than 300 conservatives to our federal courts at every level, including Justice Neil Gorsuch, Justice Brett Kavanaugh and how about Justice Amy Coney Barrett. Isn’t she something?" Pence told audience. The former vice president’s comment received polite applause, but there was no standing ovation. The reaction may be more evidence that social conservative voters are disappointed to date over what many may feel is a failure to deliver by the three Supreme Court justices
named to the high court by then-President Trump. Fox News
McCarthy Selects The Five Republicans Who Will Serve On Jan. 6 Select Committee . . . House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy will select a group of five Republicans to serve on the House Select Committee to look into the Jan. 6 riot on the U.S. Capitol, two sources familiar confirmed to the Daily Caller. McCarthy’s Republican picks include Indiana Rep. Jim Banks, Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan, Illinois Rep. Rodney Davis, North Dakota Rep. Kelly
Armstrong and Texas Rep. Troy Nehls, Politico first reported. The Daily Caller confirmed the reporting. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi announced in late June that she would be establishing the select committee. The House then approved a resolution to form the committee weeks after Senate Republicans killed a bipartisan commission in late May Daily Caller

Biden refutes US intelligence agencies on China hacking . . . President Joe Biden rejected the U.S. intelligence community's assessments on Monday when he explained why he won't introduce sanctions against China in response to its Microsoft Exchange hack. Biden did so with a statement evoking memories of former President Donald Trump's delusional contesting of U.S. intelligence assessments on Russian interference in the 2016
election. "My understanding," the president said, "is that the Chinese government, not unlike the Russian government, is not doing this [Microsoft Exchange hacking] themselves, but are protecting those who are doing it and maybe even accommodating them in being able to do it." This is factually incorrect. There are two options here: Biden either misspoke, or he is being deceptive. While the U.S. government did specifically attribute a broader campaign of Chinese cyber-espionage/
aggressive intrusion to the Ministry of State Security on Monday, I understand the U.S. intelligence community assesses the specific Microsoft Exchange attack as a state-authorized activity. Washington Examiner
Russia warns US over hypersonic missiles in Europe, could lead to ‘inadvertent conflict’ . . . The Russian Embassy in the U.S. issued a warning, in a tweet, to Washington not to deploy hypersonic missiles in Europe. The tweet begins with a red exclamation point and reads: "We would like to remind @PentagonPressSec that potential deployment of any [American flag] hypersonic [missile] in Europe would be extremely destabilizing. Their
short flight time would leave [Russian flag] little to no decision time and raise the likelihood of inadvertent conflict." John F. Kirby, the Pentagon press secretary, held a press conference on Monday and was asked by a reporter about Russia’s claim that it successfully tested a Tsirkon hypersonic cruise missile. Russian President Vladimir Putin said the weapon has no equal in the world. Of course, in a military conflict, the country that can strike first and most decisively has the
upper hand. Russia’s hypersonic advancement seems to have been noticed, especially since these missiles are apparently being designed to have nuclear capabilities. Fox News
Senate Democrats Reportedly Float Making Women Register For The Draft . . . Senate Democrats are floating an overhaul of military draft laws that would require women to register for the Selective Service System, according to a draft bill authored by Senate Armed Services Chair Jack Reed. The proposed legislative changes, reported first by Politico, could be attached to the National Defense Authorization Act, one of Congress’ “must-pass”
bills responsible for funding the Department of Defense. The draft would reportedly expand registration for the selective service to “all Americans” instead of just males. Currently, men must register once they turn 18, though there has not been a draft call since near the end of the Vietnam War. Daily Caller
Get ready, ladies. Dems are going to send us defend Ukraine's sovereignty against Russia.
House Republican Presses Biden on Removal of Military Equipment From Middle East . . . A Republican congressman is pressing the Biden administration to brief Congress on its decision to remove U.S. military equipment from the Middle East amid concerns the decision was part of a series of concessions offered to Iran during ongoing nuclear discussions. The Biden Defense Department ordered the removal last month of several U.S. anti-missile
batteries installed across the Middle East, citing the diminished threat from Iran. At least eight Patriot anti-missile systems were erected in allied countries—including Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Iraq, and Kuwait—as part of the Trump administration’s bid to deter Iranian attacks. Canada to Reopen Border for Fully Vaccinated U.S. Tourists in August . . . Canada said it would allow fully vaccinated Americans to enter the country for recreational or tourist activities beginning Aug. 9, more than a year after authorities first closed the 5,500-mile border to most travelers to limit the spread of Covid-19. The government said Monday that border restrictions for fully vaccinated travelers from other
countries could also be lifted beginning Sept. 7, assuming Canada’s Covid-19 caseload stays relatively low. WSJ
China hits back at US-led accusations over cyber attacks . . . China has challenged US-led accusations that Beijing was at the heart of a wave of global cyber attacks including an offensive against a Microsoft email application that affected tens of thousands of organizations. Diplomats across the EU, UK, Canada, Norway and New Zealand issued statements on Tuesday slamming the allegations as “groundless” and a “malicious
smear”. “China urges Canada to abandon its cold war mentality and ideological prejudice . . . stop political manipulation on relevant issues, and stop unprovoked attacks and deliberate slander against China,” said Beijing’s embassy in Ottawa. Financial Times

CDC says to avoid travel to UK amid rising COVID-19 cases . . . The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Monday warned Americans to avoid any nonessential travel to the United Kingdom (U.K.) due to rapidly rising coronavirus cases. The "Level 4" warning from the CDC is the agency's highest. The agency recommends that if travel can't be avoided, people should make sure they are vaccinated. "Because of the current
situation in the United Kingdom, even fully vaccinated travelers may be at risk for getting and spreading COVID-19 variants," the advisory notes. Separately, the State Department also issued its own Level 4 "Do Not Travel" warning. The Hill

Biden trying to fight inflation by increasing government spending . . . Someone in the White House must think inflation is a growing political problem because Mr. Biden spent most of his time on the subject explaining why it’s no problem at all. “Our experts believe and the data shows that most of the price increases we’ve seen are—were expected and expected to be temporary,” Mr. Biden said. Price increases were expected by whom? By
contributors to these pages, sure. But not by the White House budget office, which forecast inflation of 2.1% in 2021 and 2022 in its recent budget proposal. Not by the Federal Reserve, which has underestimated inflation at each of its meetings this year. White House Dossier
A basic economics course tells you that is the opposite of what government spending does. Next, President Biden is going to fight the forest fires in California with kerosene and the floods in Germany with a firehouse.
Opioid Settlement of $26 Billion Between Drug Companies, States Expected This Week . . . From 1999 to 2019, the U.S. lost nearly half a million people to overdoses of prescription and illegal opioids. Thousands of opioid-crisis lawsuits filed against major drugmakers and distributors are nearing a conclusion, with the outlines of a $26 billion deal between states and four companies expected to be announced this week and a $1 billion
settlement to resolve some of New York’s claims likely on Tuesday, people familiar with the matter said. WSJ
Prince Harry nabs $20M from Penguin Random House for memoir . . . Prince Harry is getting at least $20 million upfront to publish his memoirs — with the very same über-publisher who gave Barack and Michelle Obama a $65 million book deal. Harry has been secretly writing a memoir for nearly a year and has now sold it to Penguin Random House. While the renegade royal said Monday that he will be donating all the proceeds to charity, it’s yet
to be made clear whether he will keep the multi-million advance — believed to be at least $20 million, according to publishing insiders.Meanwhile, we’re told that Harry’s co-writer, power ghostwriter J.R. Moehringer, is getting at least $1 million as an advance. Page Six

Man who left threatening voicemails for judge in Michael Flynn case sentenced to 18 months in prison . . . A New York man who left threatening voicemails to a federal judge presiding over the case of Michael Flynn was sentenced to 18 months in prison on Monday.Frank Caporusso, who hails from Long Island, was arrested in August after he was heard saying U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan and his associates would be killed if he did not "back
out" of the case against the former national security adviser to President Donald Trump, who was accused of lying to the FBI about conversations with a Russian envoy. In April, Caporusso reached a deal with authorities and pleaded guilty to influencing, impeding, or retaliating Against a federal official by threat. U.S. District Judge Trevor McFadden, an associate of Sullivan, handed down the sentence after playing the voicemails during the court proceeding, according to CNN. Washington Examiner
Jeff Bezos jokes about ‘last meal’ before Blue Origin space flight . . . Jeff Bezos, the world’s richest man, prepared to blast off into space by joking with reporters Monday evening about his “last meal.” The Amazon founder, who has a net worth of more than $200 billion, was spotted carrying a tray of Arroz con Pollo along with his brother Mark, who will join him on Tuesday’s space flight. The two plopped the dishes of food on a
table for reporters gathered at the launch site of his New Shepard space rocket in Van Horn, Texas. Bezos could be seen sporting a belt buckle with an engraving of a rocket cradling through space. The mega-billionaire briefly joked with a reporter who asked if it was “his last meal.” “Did somebody say last meal?” Bezos responded with a laugh. Daily Caller
Life on a Border Ranch: Cut Water Lines, Downed Fences, Stolen Property . . . John Ladd, whose family has ranched at the U.S.-Mexico border for more than 125 years, says illegal immigrants tell him that President Joe Biden invited them to come. “The biggest difference with the people coming now is, when Border Patrol catches them, they tell them, they say, ‘We’re going to stay here, no matter what you do to us, because your President
Biden wants us,’” Ladd tells The Daily Signal in an interview on his ranch near Bisbee, Arizona. Ladd, 66, says he and his family are on constant alert for theft by illegal immigrants who cross the border onto his ranch. The ranchers also must make sure that cattle haven’t escaped and wandered onto the highway because illegal immigrants cut fences, Ladd says. Daily Signal

Bear with bucket stuck on head rescued after being chased up a tree . . . A bear seen wandering in Colorado with a chicken feeder bucket stuck around its head for over a week was rescued with the help of two men who chased the animal up a tree. Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) officials said the bear appeared to still be able to eat and drink, but they were concerned about what would happen later in the season when the
bear put on more weight. The two men contacted CPW, but they were concerned the bear would leave the area before officials could arrive.
"Well, Drew said he wanted to tackle it, and I said, 'I don't know if I want a part of that,' so we kind of chased it up the tree," Sherman told KMGH-TV. McConaughy said chasing the bear up a tree turned out to be a successful plan. CPW tranquilized the bear and borrowed McConaughy's ladders to safely bring the animal back down to the ground. The bucket was removed and CPW officials said they hazed the bear to reinforce its fear of humans while releasing it. UPI
