Cut through the clutter to today's top news
July 2, 2021
Good morning
Welcome to today's top news.
Leading the News . . .
Inspirational read for the summer . . . I want to let you know about a book by Deidre Reilly, who is both a subscriber to Cut to the News and friend of Keith’s. They both once worked together for Laura Ingraham on her former website, LifeZette. She is a great person and a spectacular — and often funny — writer. So Keith wanted me to let you know about her new book, "The Pretend Christian, Traveling Beyond Denomination to the True
Jesus.” It is Deirdre’s account her journey to Christ. You can buy it here on Amazon.
Notable quote: “There will never be unity. One side of the divide thinks that children should go to drag shows, women have penises, infanticide is good, and all white people are racist. There’s no common ground between us. I despise their worldview and have no respect for those who ascribe to it.” — Matt Walsh. Patriot Post
Biden and DeSantis hang out together in Florida discussing condo disaster . . . President Biden went down to Florida to see about the rescue effort and other aspects of the build collapse in Surfside. By his side was Republican governor and potential GOP presidential contender — or even, possible Donald Trump running mate — Ron DeSantis. “Thank you, Mr. President. And you’ve recognized the severity of this tragedy from day one. And
you’ve been very supportive,” governor DeSantis said as he praised Biden and the federal government’s efforts. Biden highlighted the bipartisan approach to the tragedy, saying that “we’re letting the nation know we can cooperate.” White House Dossier
People see right through this.
President Joe Biden has a problem, and her name is Kamala Harris . . . The vice president has become a comic figure in today’s Washington. Now she’s also a liability for both the president and the Democratic Party. It’s not just that Harris is unpopular. Her unique combination of falsity and incompetence generates negative press and endangers her dreams of succeeding Biden. For Harris, the month of June has been an extended replay of
highlights from Veep, the HBO comedy starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus as a clueless and floundering politician on the make. Only Harris isn’t laughing.
Her favorability among registered voters is 7 points underwater in the latest Economist/YouGov survey. Biden’s approval, by contrast, is split even: 48 percent approve, and 48 percent disapprove. More worrisome for Harris is her "very unfavorable" rating. It’s at 40 percent. That’s 3 points higher than Biden’s number—and just 3 points short of Nancy Pelosi’s. Washington Free Beacon
Trump Organization indictments are a travesty of justice . . . It’s a travesty, not a triumph: Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance’s long-running investigation (with New York Attorney General Letitia James) into the Trump Organization just produced indictments for minor offenses that almost never bring criminal charges. But this is Donald Trump (well, his company), so normal standards didn’t apply. The company’s chief financial
officer, Allen Weisselberg, walked in on his own — yet the prosecutors made a show of handcuffing him and walking him down a hall crowded with reporters. Vance acquired years of Trump Organization tax records, yet all he’s found is an alleged failure to pay proper taxes on corporate perks like cars, tuition and apartments. Any other company and it’s a civil suit, an audit, perhaps a hefty fine. If Vance had any evidence suggesting serious fraud, he’d have included them already. "Why
hasn’t he flipped yet?" MSNBC hosts yell. Maybe because there’s nothing to flip on? Editorial Board. New York Post
The leftists must be very scared that Trump may run again. So, they want to prevent him from doing that.
Trump says he's made decision on 2024 . . . Former President Trump told Fox News host Sean Hannity that he has made a decision on whether he will run for president again in 2024. "You are not going to answer, but I have to ask, where are you in the process," Hannity said to Trump on Wednesday, regarding his decision on whether to mount another White House bid. "Let me ask you this, without giving the answer, what the answer is, have you
made up your mind?" “Yes,” Trump responded. The Hill
Supreme Court Provides a Win for Commonsense Election Measures . . . On the last day of its term, the Supreme Court delivered a victory for those who support commonsense election integrity measures. The 6-to-3 result in Brnovich v. DNC was the right decision, though the three dissenting justices didn’t see it that way. Neither Arizona’s “out of precinct” policy, which requires that a ballot cast by someone on Election Day will not be
counted if cast outside of that person’s assigned precinct, nor Arizona’s prohibition on vote harvesting, which provides that only an election official, a mail carrier, or a voter’s family member, household member, or caregiver can collect and deliver someone’s mail-in ballot, violate Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act. As a matter of first principles, Justice Samuel Alito, writing for the majority, noted that “Arizona law generally makes it very easy to vote,” especially considering that
all Arizona “voters may vote by mail or in person for nearly a month before election day.” Daily Signal
Supreme Sendoff: The nine justices end term with unanimity and uncertainty . . . The Supreme Court has wrapped up its tumultuous term with a surprising degree of consensus that masked underlying tensions over the extent to which its nine members should flex their political and judicial muscle. From a beloved justice's death and a testy confirmation fight for her replacement, to fiery demands by the former president for the court to get
involved in election outcome fights-- all played out in a pandemic with virtual court hearings-- the high court enters its summer recess with uncertainty over whether another bench vacancy is imminent. Progressive lawmakers and activists have demanded 82-year-old Justice Stephen Breyer step down and give President Biden a chance to ensure his replacement is confirmed by a Democrat-controlled Senate. But such ramrod rhetoric is chancy. Fox News
‘Flippin’ gigantic’ deal! Hunter’s laptop reveals how Joe Biden met with son’s business partners . . .Iin 2014, the then-vice president entertained Hunter Biden’s business associates in the vice president’s office at the Naval Observatory in Washington, DC. Mexican billionaires Carlos Slim and Miguel Alemán Velasco were both present at the meeting. Joe Biden also reportedly flew Hunter Biden and his then-business partner Jeff Cooper to Mexico City
on Air Force 2 in 2016. They met with Aleman’s son regarding a “flippin gigantic” business deal. Joe Biden flew to Mexico on February 25, 2016, for trade talks with then-president Enrique Pena Nieto. “We are arriving late tonight on Air Force 2 to MX City. We will be there for Thursday – I’m attending meeting w/ President N w/ Dad. Jeff is with me on lane [sic] and we will be with us all day,’ Hunter Biden wrote on February 24, 2016. Pelosi drops sworn Trump enemy Liz Cheney onto the Jan. 6 committee . . . Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has named Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) to serve on the select committee investigating the attack on the Capitol by a mob of pro-Trump supporters. The House voted to form the panel on Wednesday despite GOP opposition. Cheney, who backed the formation of the panel, was recently dumped by GOP leadership over her criticisms of former
President Trump. She voted to impeach him over his actions connected to the Jan. 6 attack. White House Dossier
How “bipartisan” of Nancy.
California sets Newsom recall election for Sept. 14 . . . California Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis on Thursday set the recall election that threatens to oust Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) for Sept. 14.
“Although the window of time from which I could select a date was narrow, I believe we have chosen a fair and reasonable date for this election to take place,” Kounalakis said in a statement. “It has always been my intention to choose an election date that gives election officials and the public ample time to ensure a smooth election with broad participation.” The declaration brings to a head a yearlong signature-gathering effort by Newsom's critics to try to oust him from office. Glenn Greenwald calls out liberals who ‘loved’ his NSA reporting but are now mocking Tucker Carlson . . . Glenn Greenwald says we live in a world in which liberals who “loved” his reporting on the dangers of the National Security Agency‘s expansive power now mock Tucker Carlson‘s claims that his communications were monitored. The co-founder of The Intercept said, “When I did the reporting with Edward Snowden in 2013 and 2014,
liberals loved that reporting so much that they gave us every award that they have to offer. The Pulitzer. The Polk. The film that was done about my work with Edward Snowden was given an Oscar. I went up on the Oscar stage. They couldn’t lavish enough prizes and praise on us. And now here we are, after the Trump years, and we know that the Democratic Party and journalism, in general, has aligned with the CIA, the NSA and the FBI, and has aligned and merged with the security state.”

‘Hillbilly Elegy’ Author JD Vance Announces Run For Senate In Ohio . . . ‘Hillbilly Elegy’ author J.D. Vance has thrown his hat into the Republican primary for a U.S. Senate seat in Ohio, Vance announced Thursday. Vance joins an already-crowded field of would-be senators looking to fill the seat of Republican Ohio Sen. Rob Portman, who plans to retire when his term ends in 2022. Former Ohio Treasurer Josh Mandel and state Republican Party
Chairwoman Jane Timken have already declared their candidacies for Portman’s seat, as has Cleveland businessman Bernie Moreno.Vance has styled himself as a Trump-esque populist fighting against “elites” in Washington. Daily Caller
If you haven't watched the movie based on JD Vance's book Hillbilly Elegy, watch it. It's amazing.

Counter-drone super-weapons tested in joint US-Israel exercise . . . The US and Israel this month conducted counter-drone tests to meet the urgent need to defend civilian infrastructure and military bases against the fast-spreading threat of hostile UAV warfare. At the Kurtland Aur Force Base in New Mexico, the US tested its new Tactical High-power Operational Responder (THOR).
Both armies are concerned by the accelerating UAV attacks by pro-Iranian Iraqi Shiite militias in Iraq and Syria. The new weapons are designed to defend runways, equipment and troops from kamikaze-style swarm attacks by explosive unmanned aircraft. Iran has also armed Yemen’s Houthi rebels with killer drones for attacking military sites and oil facilities in Saudi Arabia. Tehran is clearly arming its proxies with deadly UAVs. DEBKAfile
Raytheon gets $2B nuclear missile contract with the Air Force . . . Raytheon Technologies Corp has been awarded an about $2 billion contract by the U.S. Air Force to develop and make a nuclear-armed cruise missile, the U.S. aerospace maker said on Thursday. The long-range standoff weapon (LRSO) will be manufactured in Tucson, Arizona, and is expected to be completed in February 2027, Raytheon said. It will replace the aging
air-launched cruise missile that was fielded in the early 1980s with a 10-year design life. Bloomberg News earlier on Thursday reported that the Air Force plans to buy up to 1,000 LRSOs. Fox Business

Chinese regime used U.S. to strengthen neo-totalitarianism. Differences will eventually lead to 'standoff and confrontation' . . . China’s Communist Party regime has remained hostile to the United States with little chance of evolving into a normal nation-state despite decades of engagement by Democratic and Republican governments, a former high-ranking party official said. Cai Xia, a former communist and part of the class of
offspring of senior CCP leaders known as “princelings,” said more than 40 years of U.S. trade and economic engagement with China had failed to produce a more benign system or a responsible global power. “The Chinese Communist Party’s fundamental interests and its basic mentality of using the U.S. while remaining hostile to it have not changed over the past seventy years.” Washington Times
The Chinese Communist Party Has Destroyed the Best of China . . . The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has taken strict precautions in its preparations to mark its 100th anniversary. Beijing is heavily guarded. Despite decades of tight control and brainwashing, the Chinese people are well aware that the communist system is against human nature and will not last long.
Since its takeover of China, the CCP has killed an estimated 80 million Chinese people. During its existence, it has never stopped its campaigns to purge different groups, every time picking a new group to target. Its primary targets have been those who represented the best of the Chinese people and their culture. Editorial Board. Epoch Times

J&J Vax Shows Promising Signs of Protecting Against Delta Variant . . . Johnson & Johnson’s Covid-19 vaccine showed promising signs in a small laboratory study of protecting against the Delta variant spreading across the U.S. and other countries. In laboratory testing, the vaccine triggered a strong immune response in blood samples taken from eight vaccinated people, J&J said Thursday. The positive
performance adds to a growing set of evidence indicating currently authorized Covid-19 vaccines can safeguard against the Delta variant, which appears to be more contagious than earlier strains. Wall Street Journal

Who are the highest-paid people in President Biden's White House? . . . That question was answered on Thursday with the release of an annual report with staffers' salaries, which max out at $180,000. Twenty-two White House employees make the maximum yearly salary. That list includes White House press secretary Jen Psaki, chief of staff Ron Klain and Neera Tanden, who is now senior adviser to the president after her nomination for Office
of Management and Budget director was withdrawn. Fox Business
PATEL: Why Are Republicans Agreeing To Send Armies Of IRS Agents After American Small Businesses? . . . If you wanted to find the group getting the rawest deal in 2021 America, you might start with small-business owners. Many are finding themselves working 60- or 80-hour weeks just to scrape by. During the height of COVID-19, these companies were especially beaten down. Between Jan. 1, 2020, and Dec. 31, 2020, about 30% of U.S. small
businesses closed, while total small-business revenue decreased by 31%. During the same period, the stock market boomed, and multinational corporations continued to thrive. The effects of this economic destruction are apparent in communities all over the country. Boarded-up storefronts on main streets across America are the norm. Given this dynamic, it’s almost incomprehensible that Senate Republicans are about to help pass an infrastructure package that unleashes the IRS to collect more
revenue through aggressive policing of small businesses. Daily Caller

A base-priced $129,900 Tesla Model S Plaid burst into flames while being driven this week, forcing the driver to push his way out before the car became engulfed in fire, the lawyer for the car’s Pennsylvania owner said. The unidentified driver had to "use force" to get the door open after he noticed smoke coming from the back of the car because its electronic door
system malfunctioned Tuesday, Los Angeles attorney Mark Geragos further claimed. Fox Business

The event in the Sunken Garden at London’s Kensington Palace was their second public meeting since Harry, 36, and his wife
Meghan Markle stepped away from royal duties over a year ago. True Royalty TV co-founder Nick Bullen told Fox News the reconciliation between the two brothers would "be very difficult." Fox News

Hiker reunited with dog who ran off during bear attack in Alaska . . . A hiker whose 14-week-old border collie ran off during a harrowing bear attack in Alaska earlier this week has been reunited with his puppy. With the help of several good Samaritans, Jason Umbriaco and his pooch Buckley were brought back together two days after their ordeal on the Kenai Peninsula. Umbriaco said,“I had kind of given up hope, and I was sort of
making preparations inside to just move forward without him, and now it’s like I’m gonna have those times back of just joy, and peace.” Umbriaco, of Montana, was hospitalized after he was bitten twice by a brown bear while hiking on the Kenai River Trail on Sunday evening. Alaska Wildlife Troopers said that Umbriaco’s pup had run after the mother bear’s two cubs, causing her to charge at the hiker. New York Post
I can see my border collie running after the bear cubs to play with them. It's a miracle the hiker survived the ordeal.
