US says reliance on Russian nuclear fuel presents national security risk . . . US reliance on Russia’s nuclear fuel poses a critical threat to national security and climate goals, said a senior Biden administration official, who urged Congress to provide funds to rebuild its domestic supply chain and restrict imports from the country. About 20 per cent of fuel used by the US nuclear reactor fleet is supplied through enrichment contracts with Russian suppliers. Russia controls almost 50 per cent of global enrichment capacity and had worked successfully to undermine the US nuclear supply chain over many years by dumping cheap enriched uranium products on world markets . . . The U.S. and its NATO allies served notice Tuesday that they will formally suspend their participation in a 1990 treaty limiting conventional forces in Europe, marking the demise of another landmark arms control agreement. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s move follows Russia’s formal withdrawal from the accord on Tuesday and longstanding Western complaints that Moscow wasn’t honoring the terms of the treaty. The 1990 Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE), signed a year after the fall of the Berlin Wall, placed verifiable limits on categories of conventional military equipment that NATO and the then-Warsaw Pact could deploy. Reuters

Gaza Death Toll Reported Above 10,000 as Conflict Escalates . . . More than 10,000 people have been killed in Gaza since the Israel-Hamas war erupted just under a month ago, according to the Hamas-run health ministry in the besieged territory. Since Israel began airstrikes on Oct. 7, more than 4,100 children have died and over 25,000 have been wounded, the health ministry said on Monday. Israel has regularly disputed the figures, which can’t be independently verified, and said they’re exaggerated. Bloomberg

Netanyahu Says Israel Will Control Gaza Security Indefinitely . . . Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel would seek to assume overall responsibility for security in Gaza, in an early indication that Israel plans to occupy the strip after the war, raising more questions about its exit strategy. “I think Israel for an indefinite period will have the overall security responsibility, because we’ve seen what happens when we don’t have it,” Netanyahu said on ABC News overnight. “When we don’t have that security responsibility, what we have is the eruption of Hamas terror on a scale that we couldn’t imagine.” Wall Street Journal

RNC Announces Third GOP Debate Participants . . . The Republican National Committee (RNC) announced Monday evening that five 2024 GOP primary candidates will participate in Wednesday’s third debate in Miami, Florida. Former President Donald Trump is skipping the third debate, as he did the first two, and is instead holding a rally in Florida during the same time frame. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, conservative businessman Vivek Ramaswamy, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott all met the RNC’s upped debate requirements and will take the stage, according to the press release. Daily Caller

Deer crashes through lingerie store in Michigan . . . A deer crashed into a lingerie store in Michigan and trashed the inside of the shop before finding its way back outside. Curvaceous Lingerie in Lansing shared security camera footage on Facebook showing the buck crashing through the glass and running wild through the store, knocking over mannequins and displays in the process.
