The Right Stuff In The Morning

Wednesday, March 11, 2015

Good morning! In the news today: Hillary deleted half her emails, and the server is off limits; AP finds lots of factually challenged statements; GOP pounces; Dems worried; ATF reverses bullet ban; GOP Tehran letter blows up; and 11 service members appear to have perished in a Florida chopper crash.

Hillary: I deleted half my emails, and you can't see the server . . . Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton today doubled down on her email secrecy project, saying she had deleted perhaps some 30,000 emails from her time as Secretary of State that she claims were “private.” All the emails were sent from her private account and stored on her private server. Presumably, the emails she deleted may exist somewhere on the server, but “the server will remain private,” she said. White House Dossier

It's "like saying that somebody who robs bank, once they get the money to their house, they get to decide how much to return," says National Journal's Ron Fournier.

Brutal AP fact check . . .

  • It’s a striking departure from the norm for top officials to rely exclusively on private email for official business.
  • At the very least, Clinton appears to have violated what the White House has called “very specific guidance” that officials should use government email to conduct business.
  • Skirts the issue of exchanging information in a private account that, while falling below the level of classified, is still sensitive.
  • While Clinton’s server was physically guarded by the Secret Service, she provided no evidence it hadn’t been compromised by hackers or foreign adversaries. Associated Press

Not secure . . . “To say it wasn’t compromised is to say, ‘I don’t know it was compromised,’” said Stewart Baker, a former Department of Homeland Security assistant secretary who specializes in technology and security. “It would be pretty easy for a nation-state to compromise that account, and pretty easy to hide the fact that they had compromised that account.” Politico

Clinton's iPad wasn't secure either, Fox News reports.

Nothing classified? Not likely . . . Some secrecy experts and former government officials on Tuesday were skeptical, noting the interesting turnabout that had a former top official insisting, for once, that none of her exchanges were secret. New York Times

How inconvenient: Hillary uses two phones now . . . At an event on February 24, Clinton was asked whether she uses an iPhone or an Android device. "IPhone," Clinton responded. After a pause, she added, "OK. In full disclosure, and a BlackBerry." Newsmax

Politico lists the unanswered questions

GOP: This makes no sense . . . Republican leaders sharply questioned Hillary Clinton's explanation on Tuesday regarding her use of a personal email account during her tenure as secretary of state, with one GOP congressman calling her remarks "not plausible." Fox News

Dems fear emails will haunt campaign . . . While some Dems rush to her defense after the press conference, many worry her approach does little to quiet the critics. National Journal

ATF reverses AR-15 bullet ban . . . Under intense pressure from majorities in the House and Senate, the National Rifle Association's huge membership, the Obama administration has abruptly changed course and is rescinding its push to ban popular and cheap ammo used by AR-15 owners. Washington Examiner

Eleven service members presumed dead in crash . . . Eleven U.S. military members were presumed dead Wednesday morning, according to a U.S. Defense official, after their Army Black Hawk helicopter crashed into water off the Florida Panhandle during a nighttime training mission. CNN

GOP Tehran letter backfires . . . A letter from Senate Republicans to Iran’s leadership has divided the GOP and forced it to play defense, endangering the party’s chances of passing a new round of sanctions that would kill President Obama’s nuclear talks with Tehran. The Hill

Was the letter really unprecedented? . . . From Reagan to Clinton, both Democrats and Republicans have tried to sabotage the other party’s foreign policy. Politico

Hillary fundraiser scrutinized . . . Dennis Cheng was a key fundraiser for Mrs. Clinton’s successful campaign for Senate and her 2008 presidential campaign, then followed her to the State Department, where he served as a key gatekeeper for foreign dignitaries and heads of state who sought visits with the president and secretary of state. After two years as the deputy chief of protocol at State, Mr. Cheng moved to the Clinton Foundation to serve as its chief of development, essentially the chief fundraiser. Washington Times

So what did those donors think they were getting from the Secretary of State. What DID they get from the Secretary of State?

Bush and Walker start exchanging barbs . . . With each provocation amid Walker’s fast rise, the Bush camp has grown increasingly agitated — not just by the attacks but also by what they see as a lack of scrutiny of the Wisconsin governor’s record. Washington Post

Test for GOP candidates: canceling the Iran deal . . . Vowing to cancel President Obama's budding nuclear deal with Iran is rapidly becoming a key political litmus test for the Republican 2016 contenders. Washington Examiner

Netanyahu trailing in polls . . . Following weeks in which the two parties were more or less neck-and-neck, several polls published this week showed the Zionist Union, a list headed by opposition leader Isaac Herzog, stealing a march on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud. AFP

If Netanyahu loses, it will seal Iran as a nuclear power, because the rest of the world will think even Israel has rejected opposition to Obama's Iran treaty.

University of Oklahoma expels student for racist chants . . . The University of Oklahoma’s president expelled two students Tuesday after he said they were identified as leaders of a racist chant captured on video during a fraternity event. University President David Boren said in a statement the two students were dismissed for creating a “hostile learning environment for others.” New York Post

Expelled students will have an excellent chance in court . . . The expulsions immediately struck constitutional law experts like professor Eugene Volokh, of the University of California at Los Angeles and the Volokh Conspiracy blog, as strange. Did the University of Oklahoma, a public institution, just punish speech that, while clearly abhorrent, was protected under the First Amendment? Was this a violation of the Constitution? Washington Post

Anti-Israel climate on campus leading to bigotry . . . Student governments are increasingly embracing the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) Movement, a global campaign attempting to increase economic and political pressure on Israel to pull out of land claimed by Palestinians. Fox News
