The Right Stuff In The Morning

Tuesday, March 10, 2015

Good morning! In the news today: White House launches massive counterattack against GOP for letter to Iran; Obama never appointed a State Department inspector general; Clinton to hold press conference soon; Obama knew she was using a private email; Obama dips into the GOP primary; and climate change may not be funny, but some of the numbers are.

Have a great day.

Keith

Democrats assail GOP for Iran letter . . . Democrats in the White House and Congress accused 47 GOP senators of undermining President Barack Obama in international talks to curb Iran's nuclear program, saying that trying to upend diplomatic negotiations was tantamount to rushing into war with Tehran. "The decision to undercut our president and circumvent our constitutional system offends me as a matter of principle," Vice President Joe Biden said in a statement. Associated Press

Cotton fires back . . . Sen. Tom Cotton is firing back at Vice President Joe Biden’s criticism of his letter to Iran, saying: What does he know about foreign policy? “Joe Biden, as [President] Barack Obama’s own secretary of defense has said, has been wrong about nearly every foreign policy and national security decision in the last 40 years,” Cotton said Tuesday on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” in a reference to former Pentagon chief Robert Gates, who ripped Biden in a tell-all memoir after leaving office. Obama ensured no one was watching Hillary . . . President Obama made sure there was no official watchdog supervising the State Department while Hillary Clinton was secretly sending her emails using a private server. The president has a duty to appoint independent inspectors general at every federal agency, but Obama left the position vacant at the State Department throughout Clinton's entire four-year tenure. Washington Examiner

Obama goes after Walker . . . President Obama inserted himself into the Republican presidential race Monday night with a statement blasting Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker for signing "right-to-work" legislation earlier in the day. The unusual statement—the White House has not often spoken out about state laws—comes as Walker's star continues to rise in a crowded GOP field. National Journal

Obama's moment of greatness in Selma . . . I thought it was a great speech. And I didn’t even agree with much of it. But President Obama’s address Saturday in Selma, marking the 50th anniversary of Bloody Sunday, was still a great moment because he made a passionate case for the values he believes in, but for once, didn’t demonize anyone, not even the white Alabamans who opposed the marchers. Obama to announce student aid "Bill of Rights" . . . President Obama will introduce a "Bill of Rights" for student borrowers Tuesday and announce a new executive action to help them repay college loans. The four-point bill, likely to win support among young voters, will reflect Obama's efforts and past legislative actions relating to student loans, the White House said. Washington Examiner

This is how Democrats now categorize run-of-the-mill handouts - as "rights." Actually, the only rights connected to student borrowing are the rights of lenders to get their money back. There's also the program known as "Waiting tables in the summer."

CBO confirms Obamacare price spike . . . Obamacare exchange customers are about to see spikes in their premiums, the Congressional Budget Office predicted Monday, saying insurers that offer plans are facing twin pressures from the government and the marketplace that will mean hikes of more than 8 percent a year through 2018. Washington Times

Hmm. Sounds like this might be an example of a sales technique with which we're all familiar, known as BAIT AND SWITCH.

ATF: Oops, we haven't taken away your ammo yet . . . The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is apologizing for a “publishing error” in its regulations that suggested the agency had already banned AR-15 “green tip” ammo well before officials publicly announced a proposal to outlaw the armor-piercing bullets last month. Washington Times

They're supposed to allow some time for comment and review. But someone either made a "mistake" - or knew how the "review" would turn out.

Clinton to hold press conference . . . Hillary Rodham Clinton is likely to hold a press conference in New York in the next several days to answer reporters questions about a controversy surrounding her use of a private email account at the State Department, according to three people close to the potential Democratic frontrunner. Politico

Obama knew . . . White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest today acknowledged that President Obama exchanged emails with former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton when she was in office and that he likely saw that she was using a private email address. White House Dossier

Donors sticking by her . . . Top Democratic donors say they are unfazed by the disclosure that Hillary Clinton conducted State Department business on a personal email account, although several said she could fend off Republican criticism by addressing the issue head-on and announcing her candidacy for president. Reuters

Hillary unleashes Carville . . . The Hillary camp is done meekly playing defense on the email debacle. Instead, her team has unleashed attack dog James Carville to bite the media in the butt. Fox News

The media deserve it. They've allowed people like Carville and Paul Begala, who are political operatives working for the Clintons, to pretend they are news "commentators." Now when these characters show their true face and turn it toward them, the media are all unhappy about it.

Grassley revives Huma Abedin probe . . . Senate Judiciary Committee head Sen. Charles Grassley is renewing his demand for the State Department to hand over information about a program that let Hillary Clinton aide and confidante Huma Abedin and others work for the government while hanging onto lucrative private-sector jobs. Newsmax

Jeb Bush, anti-drilling crusader . . . For years before “drill, baby, drill” became a Republican rallying cry, Jeb Bush was one of Florida’s staunchest opponents of offshore drilling. Politico

Egypt questions Obama's commitment . . . Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, in an exclusive interview with Fox News, appealed to the U.S. to play a greater role in helping his country fight terrorism. He said the suspension of U.S. equipment and arms to his country has sent a "negative indication to the public opinion that the United States is not standing by the Egyptians." Fox News

Concerned Veterans for America releases its latest video in the "Leading from Behind Case Study" series, this one about how Obama wrecked the strong hand he was given on Iraq.

UN: "Conservatism" harming women . . . Twenty years after a landmark U.N. conference on promoting gender equality, the head of the agency known as U.N. Women said Monday that a growing “conservative and extremist resistance” to equality between the sexes needs to be understood and confronted. CNS News

Danish lawmakers want Muhammed cartoons in textbooks . . . A new proposal in Denmark could result in the Charlie Hebdo shooting and cartoons of the Islamic Prophet Muhammad being taught in schools. Fox News

Climate change or data change? . . . When Dr. Roy Spencer looked up summer temperature data for the U.S. Corn Belt, it showed no warming trend for over a century. But that was before temperatures were “adjusted” by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration climate scientists — now the same data shows a significant warming trend. Daily Caller

Washington Times

Campus conservatives resist LGBT "sensitivity training" . . . A conservative student group at a Washington, DC, college has been called a “hate group” and fears it could lose its funding for refusing to take part in gay, lesbian and transgender-oriented sensitivity training. Fox News

Powell: "Dark vein" of racism in GOP . . . The United States’ first black Secretary of State Colin Powell said Sunday that he still sees a “dark vein” of intolerance in the country, specifically in the Republican Party and embattled Ferguson, Missouri. “We’ve come a long way, but there’s a long way to go. And we have to change the hearts and minds of Americans,” he told George Stephanopoulos on ABC’s “This Week.” Washington Times
