The Right Stuff In The Morning

Tuesday, February 24, 2015

Good morning! In the news today: Obama negotiating deal that would allow Iran to pursue nukes after little more than a decade; VA secretary lied about military service; Bergdahl trade may have harmed Mueller; Bibi visit not unprecedented; Israel losing support among Democrats; and a Marine who was vilified by the administration gets a place of honor in Arlington cemetery.

Have a great day.

Keith

Emerging deal would allow Iran nukes after ten years . . . Edging toward a historic compromise, the U.S. and Iran reported progress Monday on a deal that would clamp down on Tehran's nuclear activities for at least 10 years but then slowly ease restrictions on programs that could be used to make atomic arms. The U.S. initially sought restrictions lasting up to 20 years; Iran has pushed for less than a decade. The prospective deal appears to be somewhere in the middle. One issue critics are certain to focus on: Once the deal expired, Iran could theoretically ramp up enrichment to whatever level it wanted. Associated Press

I guess Israel won't mind waiting ten years to get blown up, and Obama will be on the golf course full time by then.

VA secretary lied about special forces service . . . Robert McDonald, the secretary of veterans affairs, wrongly claimed in a videotaped comment earlier this year that he served in special operations forces, the most elite units in the armed forces, when his military service of five years was spent almost entirely with the 82nd Airborne Division during the late 1970s. Huffington Post

He's the one who asked a lawmaker who served what he'd ever done in life.

Mueller brother: Bergdahl trade raised ISIS demands . . . The brother of an American woman who was killed after spending months as a hostage of Islamic State militants says Kayla Mueller's situation worsened after the government traded five Taliban commanders for a captive U.S. soldier. Associated Press

Is it possible that in saving the deserter, Obama harmed this brave young woman?

Bibi visit not unprecedented . . . The White House said the reason Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, and Secretary of State John Kerry will skip the speech, is that it broke protocol and that Netanyahu was too close to his election to be welcomed by the White House. But in 1996, the Clinton Administration hosted Netanyahu’s political opponent, Shimon Peres. Washington Free Beacon

Obama woos Warren wing with anti-Wall Street push . . . After years of dragging its feet on the issue, the White House is getting fully behind a proposal strongly opposed by the industry to police financial advisers who steer clients toward products that may not be best for them but bring in bigger commissions and fees. Politico

Gruber may have padded bills . . . Jonathan Gruber, who made national headlines last year for talking about "the stupidity of the American voter" was a target Monday in a report from the Vermont state auditor saying the economist may have padded his bills to the state. Auditor of Accounts Douglas Hoffer said he referred his findings on Gruber and his contract with the state to Attorney General William Sorrell. Associated Press

Grubby, grabbing Gruber.

Obamacare case could be derailed . . . New questions have surfaced over whether the plaintiffs in a key Obamacare challenge before the Supreme Court were legitimately hurt by the healthcare law, a controversy experts say could derail the case scheduled for oral arguments next week. Snowden damaged ability to track terrorists . . . Disclosures of National Security Agency secrets by the former contractor Edward Snowden have damaged U.S. efforts to battle terrorists, NSA Director Adm. Mike Rogers said on Monday. “I would say that it has had a material impact on our ability to generate insights as to what terrorist groups around the world are doing,” Rogers said at a conference in Washington. Washington Free Beacon

Snowden is a traitor. Not a fighter for any kind of rights.

War authorization may be meaningless . . . President Obama could still use ground troops in Iraq and Syria to fight the Islamic State and the next president could extend the war beyond the three-year limit no matter what Congress passes. The difficulty, according to the Congressional Research Service, is that Mr. Obama’s proposal for a new authorization for the use of military force would leave in place a 2001 war resolution authorizing the fight against al Qaeda. Washington Times

Democratic Rep "mind-boggled" at revelation of Mosul plan . . . Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI) said she was “mind-boggled” that the administration revealed plans to attack Mosul. “The reason why I feel so strongly about this is personally, is because it comes from my own experience at having served in Iraq. I served in a medical unit, where I saw the cost of war every single day and understand the need to make sure we don’t make the same mistakes again,” she said. Breitbart

Gabbard has emerged as one of the most responsible Democrats on national security issues and among the least afraid to challenge Obama.

Israel losing support among Democrats . . . The proportion of Democrats who sympathize more with Israel than with Palestinians in the Mideast conflict dropped ten points this year to 48 percent, according to a new poll by Gallup. CNS News

The Jews are not oppressed enough for many Democrats. Rather, they've become the oppressors in their view.

Republicans divided, DHS shutdown possible . . . Congressional Republicans remained sharply divided Monday over how to fund the Department of Homeland Security, prompting White House officials to begin preparations for a potential shutdown of the agency this weekend. Washington Post

Stop Loretta Lynch . . . What does it take for Senate Republicans to decide not to confirm Loretta Lynch, who is President Obama’s nominee to be attorney general? At what point is the lawlessness simply too much. Ted Cruz

The humbling of Rahm . . . It ought to be a coronation, Rahm Emanuel must figure. But as he nears what might or might not be the end of his exhausting race for a second term as Chicago’s mayor, the former White House chief of staff and tough-guy insider on Tuesday faces a possibly humiliating setback—particularly ego-crushing because he is running against an extremely weak field of four, has vastly more money than any of them, has television ads airing 24/7 and has run the table on endorsements. Politico

ISIS abducts scores of Christians . . . Islamic State militants have abducted at least 90 people from Assyrian Christian villages in northeastern Syria, a monitoring group that tracks violence in Syria said on Tuesday. Reuters

WHO seeks to ban marketing of desserts . . . The health arm of the United Nations does not want companies advertising cake, ice cream, or ice pops to children. The World Health Organization (WHO) developed a “European nutrient profile” to be used by countries in order to ban the marketing of desserts. Washington Free Beacon

Malaysia Airlines Flight likely steered off course . . . Experts believe Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 was likely the target of a deliberate effort to steer it off course toward Antarctica. The doomed aircraft took three sharp turns in the 90 minutes after air traffic controllers lost contact with the pilots, seasoned crash investigators revealed in a new documentary. New York Daily News

UN climate change chief steps down over sex charges . . . India's Rajendra Pachauri stepped down as chair of the U.N. panel of climate scientists on Tuesday, ending 13 turbulent years in charge after allegations of sexual harassment, which he has denied. Reuters

Vilified Marine, now dead, finally gets justice . . . His three combat tours in Afghanistan had been boiled down to a 38-second video clip, played and replayed on YouTube more than a million times. In it, Rob Richards and three other Marine Corps snipers are seen urinating on the bodies of Taliban fighters they had just killed. “Total dismay” were the words then-Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton used to describe the video when it surfaced on the Internet in January 2012. “Utterly deplorable,” agreed then-Defense Secretary Leon Panetta. Richards’s career in the military was finished. More than two years later — long after the rest of the country had moved on to other scandals — Richards, 28, died at home and alone from an accidental painkiller overdose. Now he will be buried as a hero at Arlington. Washington Post

I don't care that he peed on the corpses of the enemy. These snipers must kill the enemy directly. You can't expect that not to affect their attitude. I'd draw the line on crapping on them . . .

Alaska legalizes pot . . . Smoking, growing and owning small amounts of marijuana became legal in Alaska on Tuesday, as a growing decriminalization movement reached the United States' wild northwest frontier. Reuters

Confusion over O'Reilly's truthfulness . . . CBS News on Monday released video from four stories it aired about the Falklands War in 1982. The release of the videos, while providing more detail about the situation O'Reilly faced 33 years ago, did not resolve the issue of whether his retellings of the experience have been completely factual. Associated Press

O'Reilly threatens reporter . . . During a phone conversation, he told a reporter for The New York Times that there would be repercussions if he felt any of the reporter’s coverage was inappropriate. “I am coming after you with everything I have,” Mr. O’Reilly said. “You can take it as a threat.” New York Times

America demands Brian Williams' head . . . A new poll found that 71.6 percent of Americans want Brian Williams to resign from NBC’s Nightly News even after he apologized for misrepresenting his role in a 2003 helicopter crash in Iraq and was suspended. Washington Free Beacon

Christian florist won't accept gay wedding deal . . . Barronelle Stutzman, a Washington State florist who declined to provide flowers for a gay wedding , has rejected a deal by the attorney general’s office that would’ve forced her to betray her religious beliefs – much like Judas betrayed Jesus. Fox News

Burglars blame the Obama economy . . . It was a heist notable for its boldness, for the age of the victims — one 84, the other 81 — and for what police reported one of the assailants said just after arriving: “We are not going to hurt you. We respect you. It’s just that the economy sucks.” Washington Post

Phylis Schlafly still pushing conservatism at 90 . . . Mrs. Schlafly, the author of 25 books, still writes a weekly column, radio commentaries and a monthly newsletter, “The Phyllis Schlafly Report,” on current affairs. Washington Times
