The Right Stuff In The Morning

Wednesday, April 8, 2015

Good morning! In the news today: South Carolina officer charged with shooting an unarmed black man in the back and killing him; Obama pressure on Dems may be peeling off support for a Congressional vote on the Iran deal; Paul announces, signals anti-Washington campaign; behind closed doors with the Clintons during Monica; and the frightened Republicans of Silicon Valley.

Have a great day.

Keith

South Carolina officer charged with murdering black man . . . A white police officer in North Charleston, S.C., was charged with murder on Tuesday after a video surfaced showing him shooting in the back and killing an apparently unarmed black man while the man ran away. The officer, Michael T. Slager, 33, said he had feared for his life because the man had taken his stun gun in a scuffle after a traffic stop on Saturday. A video, however, shows the officer firing eight times as the man, Walter L. Scott, 50, fled. New York Times

Obama reveals his anger at his opponents . . . President Obama suggested he harbors some strong hostility against those who criticize him, saying it was difficult for him to “love” them. At the White House Easter Prayer Breakfast, no less. White House Dossier

Obama enlists his friends in the press to help on Iran . . . According to The Huffington Post, the meeting was off the record, meaning that as a condition of getting in, reporters were required not to report or discuss with anyone whatever they heard. That is, it’s an attempt by Obama to influence their reporting and get his ideas into their journalism without having his fingerprints on it. White House Dossier

Republicans split on Iran deal . . . Thirty-one percent of Republicans favor a new nuclear deal with Iran, creating a challenge for their party's lawmakers who largely oppose the framework accord, a Reuters/Ipsos poll showed on Wednesday. Another 30 percent of Republicans oppose the pact, while 40 percent are not sure, according to the poll. The poll showed Obama has some selling to do among members of his own party, too. Though 50 percent of Democrats supported it, 10 percent were opposed and 39 percent were not sure. Reuters

White House pressure on Dems may be working . . . The White House is trying to bottle up bipartisan legislation that would give Congress 60 days to review a final Iran nuclear deal. The pushback may be having an effect — Sen. Chris Coons, a Democrat from Delaware, is now undecided about the legislation after Republicans had touted him as a supporter. Coons is worried Republicans might use the bill as a political weapon, something the White House has warned about. The Hill

Judge refuses to lift block on Obama's amnesty . . . A federal judge in Texas has refused to lift a temporary block on a White House immigration plan that would have shielded millions of illegal immigrants from deportation, court documents show. Reuters

The judge thinks he was lied to by the administration, and he's not too happy about it.

DOJ to enforce singing of kumbaya . . . Taking a page from Google, the FBI plans to add campfire meeting areas and pods to its offices to accommodate an evolving workforce. Washington Free Beacon

Biden: I make a lot of money . . . “I make a lot of money now as vice president – I make a lot of money,” Biden said. “When the president was thanking everyone for the sacrifices they made when they got us all in the Blair House -- after he took office -- and the financial sacrifices they made, he looked at me and said, ‘Except for Joe, he’s getting a pay raise.’” Biden’s salary for 2015 is $230,700. CNS News

It's okay, he was just being humorous, not bragging. I just enjoy picking on him.

Kissinger: Iran's skill turned the negotiation "on its head" . . . In the 2,000-word piece posted on the Journal's website on Tuesday night, former Secretaries of State Henry Kissinger and George Shultz wrote that "Rather than enabling American disengagement from the Middle East, the nuclear framework is more likely to necessitate deepening involvement there — on complex new terms." The two said that Iran has mixed "shrewd diplomacy with open defiance of U.N. resolutions" to gradually turn the negotiation on its head. Newsmax

Hezbollah backs the deal . . . Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah said that the deal will allow for a “stronger and wealthier Iran” regime that will “stand by its allies [Hezbollah], and especially the Palestinian resistance [Hamas], more than at any other time in history.” “Iran will become richer and wealthier and will also become more influential,” said Nasrallah. Breitbart

Paul running against Washington . . . "The Washington machine that gobbles up our freedoms and invades every nook and cranny of our lives must be stopped," Rand Paul announced at the Galt House Hotel. Paul is not completely disenchanted with Washington: He has announced he will also run for re-election to the Senate in 2016. But Paul scarcely mentioned his day job in his speech, saying he has "been to Washington, and let me tell you, there is no monopoly on knowledge there." Washington Examiner

Paul: I'll end the snooping on Day One . . . President Barack Obama created the "vast dragnet" of records by executive order, Paul said before a crowd of supporters in Louisville, Kentucky. "And as president, on Day One, I will immediately end this unconstitutional surveillance." Newsmax

Immediately goes after Hillary . . . The idea that they have that they’re above the law, I think that’s going to be contrary to what voters are going to expect from her. I think also at some point there’s going to be more that comes out about the Clinton Foundation and as that comes forward there’s going to be a whole wrath of new questions about their dealings with the Clinton Foundation. Breitbart

If Republicans want to win, they'll wage a two-part campaign: a stirring conservative message about how to revive the country, with specifics; and doing to Hillary what Democrats usually do to Republicans.

Clintons referred to Secret Service as "the pigs" . . . Chelsea was on the phone with friend when the agent walked in. “Oh, I’ve got to go,” she said. “The pigs are here.” The agent didn’t appreciate that, Payne recalled, and tried to explain to Chelsea that he was just doing his job, which was “to stand between you, your family, and a bullet.” Chelsea replied: “Well, that’s what my mother and father call you.” Washington Free Beacon

Aww, a cute little inside joke from their days as Sixties hippies.

New Hampshire wide open . . . The sense of inevitability also is Bush’s greatest vulnerability, which means the state’s Republican voters have an appetite for one anti-Bush candidate to rise as the main challenger. Washington Times

Cruz, Paul vie for Tea Party mantle . . . The two freshman senators find themselves competing directly for that same constituency as they seek the party nomination in the 2016 presidential race. And the Tea Party wave -- which Paul rode in 2010, followed by Cruz two years later -- may only be big enough for one of them this time around. Fox News

Rahm reelected . . . Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel won a second term on Tuesday after a bruising, multimillion-dollar campaign in the first mayoral runoff in the city’s history. Emanuel handily led challenger Jesus “Chuy” Garcia, 56 percent to 44 percent, with 73 percent of the vote tallied, when The Associated Press called the race. Politico

He pretended to be nice to get reelected, but now he can go back to Rahming everyone.

Reid can't see out of one eye . . . "I’m over that, because I can’t see out of my eye, and that’s the way it’s going to be until something comes along that’ll change it,” he said, noting he had gone through 11 hours of surgery. "I can’t see out of my right eye. And that’s okay, I can live with that." The Hill

Don't worry, being a nasty, lying political operator only takes one eye.

The secret Republicans of Silicon Valley . . . In an industry where only liberal ideas are "allowed," many libertarians and conservatives keep their political views secret. National Journal

Arkansas hospital blew $8 million on solar panels . . . The Department of Veterans Affairs hospital in Little Rock, Arkansas, is reportedly taking down solar panels that still don’t work roughly two years after they were first installed in 2013. The Blaze
