The Right Stuff In The Morning

Monday, April 6, 2015

Good morning! In the news today: Obama begins the big Iran deal sales pitch; Netanyahu counters; verifying the deal probably isn't possible; Saudis next; "Cadillac tax" the next big issue for Obamacare; Dem says al Qaeda resurgent in Yemen; and political correctness tries to get into the bathroom.

Have a great day.

Keith

Obama begins sales pitch for Iran deal . . . President Obama made a detailed case Sunday for a new framework agreement on Iran’s nuclear program, calling it a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see whether or not we can at least take the nuclear issue off the table” and potentially bring regional stability to the Middle East. Washington Post

Funny how those are two of the biggest problems with the agreement. It will actually make the nuclear issue a much bigger deal by spurring proliferation and will destabilize the Middle East by empowering the region's most destabilizing force, Iran.

Verifying Iran deal not possible, experts say . . .  Arms control experts challenged the administration’s assertions that a final deal to be hammered out in detail between now and June can be verified, based on Iran’s past cheating and the failure of similar arms verification procedures. Washington Free Beacon

Saudis are next, and then - nuclear chaos . . . The failure of the United States and Israel in the face of Iran’s nuclear ambition, and the West’s failure in the face of Arab chaos, are converging into one clear and trenchant threat: a Saudi nuclear bomb. Because of its unlimited resources and its close ties to Pakistan, it will have no difficulty acquiring and transporting a few nuclear bombs from the cellars of its great, poor friend, carried by the planes of its modern and costly air force. If this happens, the terrifying scenario will begin to emerge. A bomb will lead to another bomb, nuclearization will lead to more nuclearization, and the Middle East will become a nightmare. Ari Shavit

Pro-Israel groups suspicious of Melendez indictment timing . . . There are few members of Congress more doggedly supportive of Israel then Sen. Robert Menendez. "The timing is highly coincidental. And it seems like charges of this nature, when they are brought relative to a long standing decades-long personal relationship, are very difficult to prove," said Josh Block, executive director of the Israel Project. "Given the role he has played in opposing the administration's policy in these things, it certainly has the appearance of being politically motivated." National Journal

GOP demands a vote, but will wait . . . Senate Republicans on Sunday pressed their demand that the U.S. Congress be allowed to vote on a nuclear agreement with Iran, but signaled they are willing to wait for last week's interim agreement to be finalized before passing judgment. Reuters

King: We're institutionalizing Iran as a nuclear power . . . Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., who chairs the Subcommittee on Counterterrorism and Intelligence, criticized the recently reached nuclear deal with Iran as a "bad one" that will have numerous consequences. "What the U.S. is agreeing to is to lock in the nuclear infrastructure in Iran so that they can break loose, they can break out," he said on Fox News. "We are now basically institutionalizing it [Iran's nuclear power]. We're allowing Iran to keep what we said we would take away," King said. Washington Examiner

What's so complicated about this? The infrastructure stays. Let's put it this way. They get to keep the car that was causing all the noise and pollution. In ten years they can start it back up, and in 15 they can drive it anywhere they like.

Netanyahu urges a better deal . . . "I think the alternatives are not either this bad deal or war. I think there's a third alternative. And that is standing firm, ratcheting up the pressure, until you get a better deal," the Israeli Prime Minister told CNN's "State of the Union". "A better deal would roll back Iran's vast nuclear infrastructure and require Iran to stop its aggression in the region, its terror worldwide, and its calls and actions to annihilate the state of Israel." Fox News

Pope praises Iran agreement . . . “In hope we entrust to the merciful Lord the framework recently agreed to in Lausanne, that it may be a definitive step toward a more secure and fraternal world,” the pope said from the central balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica. The Hill

Feds: Vegan diet best for the environment . . . A federal panel that helps set federal dietary guidelines is recommending Americans eat less meat because it’s better for the environment, sparking outrage from industry groups representing the nation’s purveyors of beef, pork and poultry. The Hill

Come on. Can't I just stick to recycling and eat what I want?

Former Iraqi ambassador: Mistake to remove troops . . . The former Iraqi Ambassador to the U.S. and the United Nations said Thursday that it was a “mistake” for the U.S. to remove its combat troops from Iraq at the end of 2011 and leave a corrupt and disorganized Iraqi Security Force to defend the war-torn country against Islamic terrorists. CNS News

Rand Paul to announce presidential bid Tuesday . . . Paul will announce his intentions in Louisville before setting out on a four-day tour of Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, and Nevada, the first four states that will hold caucuses or primaries. Newsmax

The GOP's puny Medicare reform . . . Critics say saving $35 billion over a decade pales compared to the nearly $9 trillion Medicare is expected to spend over that period. That's a saving of about one-third of 1 percent. Associated Press

Western Prime Minister: This is "a Christian country" . . .  “Across Britain, Christians don’t just talk about ‘loving thy neighbor’, they live it out in faith schools, in prisons, in community groups,” British Prime Minister David Cameron noted. “And it’s for all these reasons that we should feel proud to say, ‘This is a Christian country.’ Yes, we’re a nation that embraces, welcomes and accepts all faiths and none, but we are still a Christian country.” Cameron also urged his fellow citizens to speak out about the persecution of Christians around the world. The Blaze

Wow. Who knew there were still Christians in Europe?

The student, Seamus Johnston, was born female but identifies as a male. Officials at Pitt’s Johnstown campus eventually expelled Johnston for repeatedly using a men’s locker room despite the school’s order that she not do so. Daily Caller

Okay, looks like girls can't use the boys' room. So there is still hope for Western civilization.
