The Right Stuff In The Morning

Friday, December 5, 2014

Good morning! In the news today: Obama may be planning sanctions against Israel over settlements, perhaps the most aggressive move by a president against the Jewish state ever; protests spread over police non-indictments; another white cop shoots an unarmed black man; coal plants brace of closures; HHS may be cooking the books; and Boehner to override conservatives on immigration.

Have a nice weekend.

Keith

Obama may be mulling sanctions against Israel . . . The Obama administration is refusing to discuss reports that emerged early Thursday claiming that the White House is considering imposing sanctions on Israel for continuing construction on Jewish homes in Jerusalem. State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf dodged several questions on Thursday when confronted with reports that the administration had held secret internal meetings to discuss taking action against Israel for its ongoing building in East Jerusalem. Washington Free Beacon

The president no longer needs Jewish votes.

Guess who has the Garner case now? . . . The federal civil rights investigation into the chokehold death of Eric Garner could present a new complication for Loretta E. Lynch’s nomination as attorney general, because she will be heading the inquiry as the United States attorney for the Eastern District of New York even as she undergoes scrutiny in the new Republican-controlled Senate. New York Times

Activist who met with Obama arrested . . . A Ferguson protester who met with President Obama earlier this week was charged with assault stemming from an incident that occurred last week during protests over a grand jury’s decision in the shooting death of Michael Brown. Daily Caller

The election was not a message to "get stuff done" . . . This assertion, which is not just wrong but disprovable, serves the White House purpose of quieting conservatives who are willing to muck up business as usual in order to scuttle or at least make a vigorous point about President Obama’s unconstitutional effort to legislate immigration law from the West Wing, among other unlawful acts. But it’s nonsense. White House Dossier

Obama's unqualified ambassadors . . . President Obama, the apostle of Hope and Change is the worst offender when it comes to giving political cronies ambassadorships, notes Andrea Mitchell. Yes, Andrea Mitchell. White House Dossier

Calorie posting requirement to cost business $1.7B . . . The federal government formally completed regulations that will force vending machines and restaurants to display calorie information, which can lead to businesses being fined thousands of dollars for not including the number of calories in a mayonnaise packet. The regulations, which originated in Obamacare, total 319 pages and will cost industry $1.7 billion to comply. Washington Free Beacon

Yes, they'll pass the costs to you.

Coal plants brace for closures . . . The energy industry and coal-producing states are projecting a wave of power plant closures in the final two years of the Obama administration as Environmental Protection Agency regulations take hold. Fox News

Funny numbers out of HHS? . . . HHS says premiums for the lowest-cost silver plan will increase on average by 5 percent. Republicans are questioning those numbers and sources tell the Washington Free Beacon they are looking into it, but believe the numbers are inaccurate because the administration has “reworked” parts of the plan to produce a smaller increase in premiums. Washington Free Beacon

What? A lie about Obamacare? Impossible.

Obama unveiling Carter for SecDef this morning . . . President Barack Obama will nominate former senior Pentagon official Ashton Carter on Friday to replace Chuck Hagel as defense secretary, the White House said. Yahoo News

GOP prepares border legislation . . . U.S. Republicans, outraged with President Barack Obama for easing deportations of millions of undocumented residents, plan legislation in 2015 strengthening the U.S.-Mexican border to discourage illegal immigration. Reuters

Boehner vows to avoid shutdown . . . Overriding objections from some conservative Republicans, U.S. House Speaker John Boehner vowed on Thursday to plow ahead with a spending bill that averts a government shutdown while keeping some budget "leverage" over President Barack Obama's immigration order. Reuters

Top Boehner Lieutenant promises total amnesty . . . “I’m going to use my assets and resources in the new year to work with this Congress… to have a well-understood agreement  . . . where we can have people be in this country and work, and where not one person is quote ‘thrown out’ or ‘deported,’” said Rep. Pete Sessions, the chairman House rules committee. Daily Caller

This may represent Boehner's view. The Rules Committee is basically a tool of the House leadership.

Brown, Garner families at State of the Union? . . . Members of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) are talking about inviting the families of Eric Garner and Michael Brown to President Obama's State of the Union address in Washington next month. The Hill

No evidence linking Christie to lane closures . . . No evidence was found by New Jersey lawmakers to show New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie was involved in a plot to close lanes near the George Washington Bridge last year. Fox News

Video || Gowdy rebuts racism charge . . . Trey Gowdy sets immigration hack Marielena Hincapie straight after she suggests race is the reason why Republicans oppose Obama’s immigration executive order. The Right Scoop

Symbolic House vote blocks immigration order . . . House Republicans rebuked Obama on Thursday over his deportation amnesty, voting chiefly along party lines to approve a bill nullifying the policy and further escalating what has quickly become a full-blown constitutional clash. The bill is unlikely to go anywhere amid a White House veto threat and a vow by Senate Democrats not to bring it up at all. Washington Times

Last minute special interest gifts . . . Tucked inside the massive defense policy bill now pending on Capitol Hill is a rewrite of terrorist watch lists, a host of new national park sites and a land deal that American Indians say threatens to destroy ancient burial grounds. Washington Times

Hillary Clinton, country gal . . . A PAC's country song video toasts Hillary. But promoting Hillary as country seems a little like trying to frame Al Shaprton as a member of the British aristocracy. I mean, she’s a Chicago girl who went to Wellesley, for goodness sake. White House Dossier

Buffet ready for Hillary . . . Billionaire investor Warren Buffett gave $25,000 to the pro-Clinton group Ready for Hillary last quarter. The sum is the highest donation that the group allows. The Hill

White cop shoots unarmed black in Phoenix . . . The deadly shooting of a black, unarmed drug suspect by a white Phoenix police officer who mistook a pill bottle for a gun demonstrates the challenges law enforcement agencies face at a time of unrest over police tactics. Phoenix police say the officer feared the suspect was armed during their struggle, but some critics say the officer went too far. Associated Press
