The Right Stuff In The Morning

Friday, February 6, 2015

Good morning! In the news today: Obama wants to change politics for a generation; Obama says Christians did things comparable to what ISIS is doing; DHS shutdown becoming more likely; Obama attacks free speech, again; NBC stands behind Williams, even though Brokaw wants him out; and Harvard hanky-panky loses its tenure.

Have a great day.

How Obama wants to be the new Reagan . . . As the administration sees it — the president now has an opportunity to recast the way that liberal economic policies are thought of for a generation. “Because the economy did well under Reagan — even though some of the work was done before Reagan got there — we believed in this country for a long time that it was less government, less taxes is good for economic growth,” Obama adviser Dan Pfeiffer said recently. “And we have been battling that conception, and Democrats were forced to play on that field for a very long time. “We want to change the field,” Pfeiffer said. Obama to Christians: Get off your high horse . . . President Obama Thursday said he and other Christians should not “get on our high horse” with respect to the ISIS rampages in the name of religion, suggesting that Christians had done similar things in the name of their religion during the crusades and with slavery in the United States. "Lest we get on our high horse and think this is unique to some other place, remember that during the Crusades and the Inquisition, people committed terrible deeds in the name of Christ. In our home country, slavery and Jim Crow all too often was justified in the name of Christ," Obama said. White House Dossier

Graham to Obama: The religions are not the same . . . Evangelist Franklin Graham said there was a difference between Jesus Christ who “taught peace “ and did “not take life” versus Mohammed, who “was a warrior and killed many innocent people” and that “true followers of Christ emulate Christ – true followers of Mohammed emulate Mohammed.” CNS News

Obama attacks free speech at prayer breakfast . . . President Obama used the National Prayer Breakfast Thursday morning to undermine one of the Constitution’s most fundamental rights, suggesting those who demean Islam are abusing the use of free speech. White House Dossier

Jarrett could gain yet more power . . . President Obama will lose two of his most senior aides over the next few months, departures that could further augment the power of the person who is already the paramount Obama advisor, Valerie Jarrett. The departure of Obama senior advisor Dan Pfeiffer next month would leave Jarrett as the last remaining White House official who has been part of Obama’s inner circle since the start. Reporters think Obama is spying on them . . . In a survey of investigative reporters that makes Richard Nixon’s enemies list look like child's play, nearly seven in 10 said they believe that the Obama administration has spied on their phone calls, emails and online searches. Washington Examiner

Obama wants to dismantle watchdog protections . . . A recently created rule intended to block the Justice Department from thwarting the efforts of its own internal watchdog would be killed off under President Obama's budget proposal. Washington Examiner

DHS shutdown becoming more likely . . . The chances of a shutdown at the Department of Homeland Security are growing by the day, with congressional leaders at a stalemate over legislation that would provide funding after Feb. 27. "A shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security in these times is frankly too bitter to contemplate, but we have to contemplate it," Johnson told reporters this week. Republicans are using the funding measure as leverage to try and roll back the president’s executive actions on immigration, with some arguing that the administration is overstating the impact of a shutdown at DHS. Top black lawmakers boycotting Netanyahu . . . Reps. John Lewis (D-Ga.), the civil rights icon, and G.K. Butterfield (D-N.C.), the chairman of the CBC, said they won't attend Benjamin Netanyahu's March 3 speech before Congress to protest Speaker John Boehner's (R-Ohio) decision to invite the prime minister without first consulting President Obama and Democratic leaders on Capitol Hill. Christie target of a new probe . . . Federal law enforcement officials have launched a criminal investigation of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and members of his administration, pursuing allegations the governor and his staff broke the law when they quashed grand jury indictments against Christie supporters, International Business Times has learned.

Bobby Jindal has a fiscal problem . . . Louisiana’s budget is hemorrhaging red ink, and it’s getting worse. He inherited a $900 million surplus when he became governor seven years ago, and his administration’s own budget documents now show the state is facing deficits of more than $1 billion for as far as the eye can see. Politico

Memo shows U.S. plan to influence Israeli elections . . . A coalition of U.S.-funded progressive groups has planned a massive get-out-the-vote effort to influence the Israeli elections, targeting communities that are most likely to vote against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his right-leaning Likud Party, according to a confidential strategy memo obtained by the Washington Free Beacon.

This exactly the strategy the Obamaites used in 2012, drilling down to get out the support of the base. But in the case, the anti-Netanyahu base in Israel is the Arabs. So we have political operatives linked to Obama in Israel spurring Arabs to unseat Obama's enemy, Netanyahu.

Obama turned down Jordan's request for drones . . . The Obama administration this year turned down a request from Jordan for Predator spy drones that would help it locate targets in the war against the Islamic State. Washington Times

Job growth strong in January . . . Employers in the U.S. added more jobs than forecast in January, capping the biggest three-month gain in 17 years, and workers’ earnings jumped. The 257,000 advance in payrolls last month followed a 329,000 gain in December that was bigger than previously reported. But the unemployment rate climbed to 5.7 percent as the improving job market lured more Americans into the labor force. Bloomberg

Note: The labor force participation rates remain at historic lows. And the U-6 rate, which includes the unemployed, underemployed and those who are not looking but who want a job, remains at about 11 percent.

Williams apology labeled deceptive . . . Army flight crews said Thursday that NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams, in his apology over a false Iraq War story he had told for more than a decade, left out key facts in his admission, the latest development in an embarrassing episode for the face of the news network. Fox News

NBC stands behind Williams . . . NBC News went into damage-control mode a day after the public symbol of the network, anchor Brian Williams, faced a torrent of derision and criticism for telling a story about his wartime reporting that has proved to be untrue. As public disapproval roared on social media, NBC sought to protect and defend Williams, its lead anchor since 2004 and the most popular anchor in the nation. Washington Post

Brokaw wants Williams out . . . “Brokaw wants Williams’ head on a platter,” an NBC source said. “He is making a lot of noise at NBC that a lesser journalist or producer would have been immediately fired or suspended for a false report.” New York Post
